Understanding Dental Implants

Dental implants are titanium posts that are surgically implanted into the gum, into space where the natural tooth once was. Titanium is the preferred material of choice due to it being a biocompatible material. The body does not reject titanium like it would other types of metals. Titanium is also resistant to erosion. Once the post has been surgically placed, it will begin to fuse with the jawbone, through a process called osseointegration. After the healing phase has been completed, and osseointegration successful, the dental crown will be placed.

Dental implants can replace just one single tooth, or several can be used to replace a number of missing teeth. Implants are also often used as a means of providing support to dentures.

Who Is A Candidate For Dental Implants?

Most patients will be good candidates for dental implants. However, some will not be immediately suitable candidates for a dental implant. To qualify for dental implants, the patient should be in good health and should have sufficient bone in the jaw. Bone regression can happen quite rapidly once the natural tooth is lost. Without sufficient bone, the process of osseointegration will not be successful.

A bone graft may be required, to ensure the success of the dental implant. Furthermore, patients should have healthy gums that are free from any gingivitis or periodontal disease. Gum disease can potentially increase the risks for an infection, and also increase the risk that the implant will fail. Proper periodontal care is needed for dental implant success.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The procedure will only be possible once there is enough bone in the jaw to ensure successful osseointegration. Patients will be made to feel comfortable and relaxed for the procedure. Anesthesia options will be discussed prior to the procedure, to ensure that the best options are selected to meet your needs.

Once you are numb, the procedure will begin with a small gum incision. Using the right dental tools, a small hole will be made to accommodate the dental implant titanium post. The post will be screwed securely into the bone in your jaw.

Osseointegration can take several weeks in order to be completely successful. In the interim, a temporary crown may be fitted atop the implant post. Once the titanium post has successfully fused with your bone you will return to the dental office to get the permanent crown placed.

Healing From Dental Implant Procedures

There may be some minor discomfort and swelling immediately following the procedure. Any discomfort can be managed well with over-the-counter pain relievers and ice packs. The ice packs can also help to control the swelling.

Stick to soft foods for the first few postoperative days. Take care when brushing and flossing, so that you do not inadvertently irritate the tender healing gum. If you experience severe pain or spike a fever, be sure to reach out to our office for further guidance.
